EN: The installation If these walls could speak: Reading Miguel Ángel, 8 aimed at enhancing our vision of the International Institute’s building at Miguel Ángel, 8. Through a series of small interventions arranged throughout the building, encompassing wall vinyls, rubbings and historical documents, I wanted to push the building’s users to see the extent to which the place of the present is the result of a dense fabric of projects, desires and developments. This piece was the product of a year-long collaboration with the IIE, a relationship that has most notably taken the shape of the course, “If these walls could speak: Reading Miguel Ángel, 8”, first offered in spring 2018.
The quotations distributed throughout the main stairway, from the entry to the third floor, come from two sources. On the one hand, the English quotes are from the article, “A Finished House” (1911), by William H. Gulick, husband of founder Alice Gordon Gulick. It is a fascinating text that reveals the extent to which the Gulicks thought through every last detail of their new headquarters. On the other, the Spanish quote is taken from the article, “Enseñanza neutra. El Instituto Internacional” (1913), written by Vicente Almela for El Heraldo de Madrid, which captures the effect the building had on the inhabitants of Madrid shortly after being built.

ES: Si estos muros hablasen: Leer Miguel Ángel, 8 fue una instalación que pretendía iluminar nuestra forma de contemplar la sede del Instituto Internacional, ubicada en la calle Miguel Ángel, 8. Mediante una serie de pequeñas intervenciones —vinilos de pared, frottages y documentación histórica— dispuestas por todo el recinto, recalcaba hasta qué punto el lugar actual es el resultado de un denso tejido de proyectos, deseos y devenires. Esta intervención fue el fruto de un año de colaboración con el IIE, una relación que tomó forma, entre otras cosas, del curso “If these walls could speak: Reading Miguel Ángel, 8”, impartido en primavera 2018.
Las citas que se distribuían por la escalera principal, desde el portal hasta la tercera planta, provienen de dos fuentes. Por un lado, las citas en inglés son del artículo “A Finished House” (1911), de William H. Gulick, el marido de la fundadora Alice Gordon Gulick, un texto fascinante que revela hasta qué punto los Gulick pensaron en cada detalle de su sede. Por otro, la cita en castellano está tomada del artículo “Enseñanza neutra. El Instituto Internacional” (1913), escrito por Vicente Almela para El Heraldo de Madrid, que capta la impresión que causó el edificio en el público madrileño al poco de su inauguración.
